Health Services

At Ojibwa Indian School, the health and safety of our students are our top priorities. Below is an overview of our health services to support your child's well-being at school.
School Nurse Services
Our dedicated school nurse is here to provide essential health services for your child, including:
- Medical Care – Immediate care for sick or injured students.
- Health Counseling – Guidance and counseling on health-related issues.
- Vision Screenings – Identifying vision problems early.
- Health Activities – Assisting with and promoting health-related activities and programs.
Contagious or Infectious Diseases
To maintain a healthy school environment, we follow strict guidelines for contagious and infectious diseases:
- Students showing symptoms of a contagious disease will be sent home.
- A student may return to school only with a written statement from a physician confirming they are free from contagion, per local board of health regulations.
Immunization Requirements
For the safety of all students, parents or guardians must provide proof of immunizations before admission.
- Parents or guardians must present proof from a licensed physician or an authorized State Department of Health representative.
- Required immunizations include:
- Diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus
- Measles, rubella (German measles), mumps
- Poliomyelitis
Administering Medication at School
If your child requires prescribed medication during school hours, please follow these steps:
- Notify the Ojibwa Indian School Administration about your child's medication needs.
- The administration will inform the school nurse, who will administer the medication.
- Inform the school office about any medications your child takes, including over-the-counter medications such as aspirin or cough medicine.
Illness or Minor Injury
In the event of an illness or minor injury, the school nurse will:
- Assess your child's condition and provide appropriate care.
- Contact you at their discretion to inform you of your child's status and discuss any necessary next steps.

Carol Breland has been working in the school system for 30 years where her first job was in the physical therapy department from 1986-1990. She was the school nurse from 1992 -1997 for the TMCC Schools. She took time off to stay home and take care family. She went back to work for OIS in 2002 position as the school nurse and is currently serving in that capacity.
